There are several ways to get hotel discounts such as coupons, promotions and private travel clubs. This is how it works, most of the public sites that you use are paid a commission from the hotel because you used their site to make a reservation. This is why they are making millions of dollars per year off commissions, plus they increase their rates to even make more money. 

On the other hand, travel clubs do not receive commission for your Hotel bookings so they are able to pass that savings onto you. It is very simple, if you stop going to these public sites and making reservations and start doing it via private sites and travel clubs then you will save a great deal of money on your travel expenses.

The biggest issue is that you are saturated with discounts everywhere you look and you as a consumer don't know the difference in rate codes, so you are assuming you got a good discounts. There are several rate codes the the hotel industry uses and you need to be sure that your discount is based off the rack rate, or best available rate, or the merchant rate. So in some cases 50% off the rack rate is a less of a discount than 20% off the BAR rate which is less than 10% off the merchant rate. So the bigger the number does not always mean the bigger Hotel discount.
